An Android application implementing the GeoSMS standard is close to release. Called I Am Here, the application is waiting only on a decent-looking launch icon and the creation of an Android Market account. Once ready, it will be released open-source and will serve as the reference application for the GeoSMS standard.
It allows a user to compose a geotagged message, as shown below. The message is then passed on to the handset’s built-in SMS application for actual sending.
When a geotagged SMS is received, the application will display the location (or locations) using a compass needle and distance counter, as shown. With the press of a button, a map view is also available.
